RV kitchen short on space? Zip locks to the rescue

A common issue among RVers is the small space allowed for the galley. RV refrigerators seem so Lilliputian in comparison to the ones left "back at the house." Getting more "stuff" into the fridge or ice box may require some thinking out of the box.

What often impacts is the huge amount of "box to contents" ratio manufacturers design into their products. "Make the package look big, while making the contents smaller, and the fools will buy it!" is the seeming thinking of some grocery producers. Even when the package fits the original contents, after a bit of use, the package is still big--too big for the space.

Here are two common items you can reduce space with the use of zipping freezer bags.

Whipped Topping: On a low-carb diet, whipped topping can be a real treat--few carbs, but a lot of taste on those strawberries. But the plastic containers are so inflexible. We simply "download" the contents of the plastic tub to a suitable zip lock bag. We then snip off a lower corner of the bag (keeping it small) and we squeeze out the topping. Saves on serving hardware, and the bag can be stuffed inside another intact freezer bag and shoved around in any handy corner of the fridge.

Double duty popcorn: We like to keep our popcorn in the freezer, and a zipping freezer bag allows the popcorn to "flex" into just about any available crevice. The "double duty" here is that a freezer bag of popcorn kernels makes a dandy ersatz "ice pack" when a headache or other medical necessity arises.
