Take no chances: Sterilize your water tank

In our travels we RVers fill our drinking water tanks from many different sources, most of which we have no clue as to their sterility. Just to be sure that there are no pathogens growing in your tank, every six months sanitize it by pouring in one-quarter cup of bleach for every 15 gallons of water in a full tank.

Let stand overnight. Drain, fill, and rinse at least twice, or until chlorine odor is gone. Better yet, fill with water and bleach when leaving your last campground and let it slosh around in the tank as you head home or to your next campground. Then drain and rinse.

  1. To sanitize the whole system, run the water and bleach solution through the hot and cold faucets until you smell the bleach. When you rinse the fresh water tank and refill it make sure to rinse the faucets until the smell of bleach is gone.
