Is low-fee enroute camping a possibility at full-service campgrounds?

In last Saturday's newsletter, RV Travel Editor Chuck Woodbury wrote about the possibility of full-service campgrounds and RV resorts considering allowing enroute RVers to check in after 7 or 8 o'clock in the evening, use no hook-ups, restrooms, swimming pool,or other services that full-price campers pay, and leave at an early hour of the morning for a fee of around $10. Even over-flow lots would work.

I, too, feel that many traveling RVers, who only want a place to sleep for the night, would pay such a fee when they would otherwise stay in a Walmart or Cracker Barrel parking lot.

To determine whether this is a workable idea, or whether campground owners would consider such a proposal, as you travel around ask the owners and managers that you meet for their thoughts. If enough people ask, maybe the campground owners would start to weigh the idea. Let Chuck know what you find out. Maybe it will start a movement.

  1. I think for $10 or so a night you should be able to hook up to water & electric. But as you said, not use any other facilities. Because if it's summertime you're gonna need to use your a/c. :)

Just think, if campground owners would do this they would be making that $10 or $15 and only providing electricity and water for maybe 6 to 8 hours (or less) overnight. They could even set up time frames--say, if you arrive at 10 p.m. or later and leave before 8 a.m., it's the cheaper amount.
