Got RV plumbing leaks?

puuikibeach on flickr.com
With all the bouncing and bumping our RVs take on the roads these days, it's a wonder they manage to hold together. Rock and roll can take its toll on plumbing connections, and even a "tiny" plumbing leak can create serious problems if not fixed right away. Water in the wrong place will rot away structure.

Here's a relatively easy way to figure out if you may have a plumbing leak. With water in fresh water storage tank, disconnect from "city water," and turn on your RV water pump. The pump should run for a bit to pressurize the system and then shut off. Make sure all your faucets are shut off (including the outside shower, if you have one). The water pump should not run again until you "call" for water by turning on a faucet or flushing the toilet. If the pump does "bump" it's a clue you could have a leak. Sometimes air will displace in the water heater and cause a bit of a pump run, but it should not happen regularly.

If you hear the pump with no demand for water, start looking for leaks. Look for wet spots everywhere there's a plumbing fixture and chase the lines down throughout the rig. You'll find yourself opening cabinets and poking around in basement storage, but persevere and repair.
